It was the subject of a television movie by Hollywood legend Barbra Streisand in 1995. Now the real-life individuals of a memoir that Streisand adapted are about to share their own perspective in a documentary that will play as part of the 2021 Edition of the Paris International Film Festival, which takes place from 4th – 14th February 2021.

SURVIVING THE SILENCE focuses on the challenges and eventual truths that formed one of the most significant military trials and the start-off point for a journey of enlightenment for all involved.

In 1992, Colonel Patsy Thompson was a decorated Army nurse, two years off retirement and had served her country in conflict zones for over thirty years. However, she was then asked to preside over the military review board that led to the expulsion of Colonel Margarethe Cammermeyer for admitting she was a lesbian, even though she herself was living as one in private for years with her own life partner Barbara Brass.

Cammermeyer, a highly decorated nurse and war hero, was well on her way to becoming a General in the service, but during a security clearance interview, the truth came out and thus led to her highly publicised expulsion from the Army National Guard. Cammermeyer’s memoir, SURVIVING IN SILENCE, became the source material for the executive-produced Streisand film and starred Glenn Close.

As a facet for embracing LGBTQ+ perceptions and appreciation and enhancing the love that we must all feel during this uncertain time of process, the documentary is certainly one of the key elements that the Paris International Film Festival is keen to highlight when it comes to change – and forms part of an amazing 2021 event.

There are some incredible films in the zone, as well as an amazing Festival Jury, a Script Competition – and the chance to network virtually with the community, regardless of whether you have never involved yourself in the cinema, or whether you are a veteran in front of and behind the camera.

Film And TV Now, as an Official Partner themselves, prides itself on continuing to promote and support the film community during this great time of change and transition in the world.
